Population and Sustainable Development

The Report Population and Sustainable Development 2003 was prepared by the Ministries of Economic Development and Social Development, the Department of Labour and Statistics New Zealand as part of the New Zealand Sustainable Development Strategy. The report discusses how changes in New Zealand's population over the next 50 years are likely to impact on our future development and wellbeing. It draws together information from a wide range of sources in order to raise issues for policy makers and contribute to the public debate about New Zealand's future.

To assist planners and analysts incorporate sound analysis of population issues and demographic data in their advice to decision makers, the same agencies developed the Population and Sustainable Development website [New Zealand Government link], which was launched on 18 October 2004. The website is a practical guide on population issues and public policy, and provides a single point of access to population information held on the websites of nineteen government agencies. The site has been designed for use by both expert and non-expert users.
